In 2017 we introduced Rugby Sevens for girls – the first school in Sydney’s Inner West to do so.
Enthusiastically taken up by 29 students initially, the program of after school rugby skills training is augmented by invitation matches, gala days and training with Olympic champions, the Australian Women’s Rugby sevens team.
Santa Sabina’s first ever rugby game was played in front of an international audience as the curtain-raiser match before the Bledisloe Cup in Sydney in August 2017. Defeating the more experienced opposition, the result was a dream win for the Santa team who had been training for eight weeks ahead of the match.
Rugby Sevens is still a new sport for girls. We are working with Rugby Australia on establishing an interschool competition. In the meantime our students are enjoying the skills development program as well as hosting the invitation matches.
