Congratulations to our Superstar Coders of Year 6 who have just been named joint winners of NSW Tech Girls Movement 2018 competition.
There were over 1000 entries in Australia including four teams from Santa Sabina College. The Year 6 Superstar Coders – Madeline Douglas, Rochelle Dias, Bronte Sprotte, Su Yee Lay and Annie Mullen – created an App called Share2Care. They shared their win with Danebank and the EMJ team.
Share2Care connects businesses and individuals to charities. Share2Care aims to reduce the number of food going to landfill, using the app. Consequently, charities can collect surplus products for distribution amongst the less fortunate community. When logged in, businesses, supermarkets and individuals are able to submit a post with their name, product, quantity, contact, and location. This data is then published on the map and search page, which charities can view and collect the items to give to the needy. Share2Care is a unique application focusing on donating discarded food (in good condition) to the poor.
Students spent three months working with their coaches and mentors to build a mobile app to solve a problem in the community. The mentors were women who are industry professionals. Their role was to guide and support the teams to solve problems, develop leadership skills and provide industry experience to help students implement a solution.
All other Santa Sabina teams were awarded the Australian United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Awards. These girls will be presenting their Apps at the Showcase on Saturday 15 September at Accenture’s head office in Barangaroo.
Santa Sabina’s Leader of Learning Technology Rosanne Sukkar said she was especially proud the students chose a social justice cause for their App, true to the Dominican charism of their school.
“Connecting business to charity when they could have chosen anything for their app shows their awareness of the school’s mission to educate students to act with justice and compassion”, she said.
“It has been an absolute pleasure working with these students, I witnessed them work as a team to solve problems, use feedback from industry mentors to improve their app, develop exceptional coding skills and develop a deeper understanding of the world they live in and their social responsibilities.”
