Our first Tuesday morning professional learning session was held this week. We had some stimulating inter-disciplinary (and cross-campus!) discussion about the ways in which critical thinking and abstract connections can be represented and enhanced visually. We were drawn to the articles about Design Walls/Learning Walls. We could see the potential for these walls in helping students to develop Design and Technology projects and explore literary texts. We could also see potential for them in teachers’ own development of units (and saw them expanding over walls in our new collaborative spaces).
In Middle School, an exciting initiative was proposed that draws on students’ STEM knowledge to create a museum-style circuitry board to represent migrant journeys spatially and visually. We also discussed some of the advantages of these physical displays over digital pinboards. Some exciting ideas for classroom projects emerged but they are still in embryonic form. We really enjoyed our session.
