Gold Duke of Ed: sea kayaking adventure in the Whitsundays

Twelve Santa Sabina students spent their winter break from school on the adventure of a lifetime as part of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – an eight-day sea kayaking expedition through the stunning Whitsunday Islands.

Starting at the iconic Whitehaven Beach, students paddled alongside turtles and dolphins, snorkelled vibrant reefs, and camped under the stars. The journey tested their resilienceteamwork, and adaptability, especially when weather conditions forced changes in plans.

‘It wasn’t glamorous, but that was the point. We had to rely on each other, laugh through exhaustion, and take in the kind of beauty you can’t get from a photo.’
– Eva Villarroel

From hiking Whitsunday Peak to navigating tides and setting up camp, students embraced every challenge.

‘This journey taught me that growth often comes with challenges. When your team works well together, everything becomes easier.’
– Caitlin Leong

‘We built resilience and learned how to support all members of our group – whether through UNO, singing, or camping under the stars.’
– Emma Kearns

The trip was more than an outdoor adventure – it was a transformative experience that built confidence, leadership, and lifelong friendships.

‘From snorkelling to eating dinner on the beach, every moment brought laughter, teamwork, and lasting memories.’
– Abigail Middleton

‘I learnt how to navigate by the stars and how tides impact our travel kayaking. I really enjoyed sleeping outside and seeing the stars and sunrise from my sleeping bag.
