Writing in the ‘real’ world

Last year I challenged my Year 11 English Extension class to have something published in the ‘real’ world to provide a more authentic audience for their writing than just me as their classroom teacher. This challenge makes them think about writing as more than just assessment tasks and the prosaic nature of some ‘school ‘writing. It encourages them to think about the audience for whom they are writing, the purpose of their writing and the context in which it will be read and published. It invites them to develop a point of view, share their ideas and engage with the world of ideas beyond the confines of the school walls.

I was delighted on Wednesday when working with a student on her English Extension 2 Major Work when she reminded me of this challenge and revealed that she had had an article published.  She was thrilled with the almost 100 comments she had received from readers around the globe, most supportive and complimentary of the point of view she was presenting.

What a great way for students to become authentic writers who have a voice and something interesting and worthwhile to say to people here and across the world!
