Primary Years Eco Warriors

Inspired by ABC’s War on Waste and the need to live more sustainable lives, Year 4’s Gardening Club and the Eco Leadership Team are determined to embrace and transform our community to be committed to stewardship of the earth and responsible citizens caring for creation.

After applying for and receiving a $1500 grant last year from the Strathfield Council, the Gardening Club and Eco Team have purchased and set up a worm farm, compost bin and two Vegepods. The Gardening Club has two tomato plants growing and members are excited to get some lettuce and other vegetables growing. Our enthusiastic Prep students will be planting seeds and investigating how things grow in the coming weeks.

Furthermore, the Eco Warriors have established a strong connection with our local council and will be undertaking some environment and sustainability education classes dealing with:

  • waste (reduction, recycling) and pollution (air, water and land)
  • composting and worm farming
  • science – energy, climate change
  • water, rivers, wetlands and catchments
  • biodiversity – native plants and animals, conservation
  • insects and macro – Invertebrates
  • growing and propagating plants, gardening.

We are very excited to learn, grow and make a renewed commitment to stewardship of the Earth and its gifts.

Clean Up Australia Day

“Australia has one of the best natural landscapes in the world.
From our pristine beaches, ancient forests and flourishing sealife, we have some of the unique flora and fauna.
But the rubbish we create through mass consumption is choking our streets, beaches, parks, bushland and waterways.
And along the way it’s killing one of our best assets: Nature!”

This month, the Eco Team led the fight against pollution in our local community by encouraging everyone to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day. The students on the Primary Years Campus joined together to clean up our school grounds and our surrounding streets.

Working together we can make a difference.

“When the rubbish is gone, nature can carry on”.
