This term, our Primary students discovered that learning Italian is about much more than vocabulary and grammar. Through the beloved story of Pinocchio, they explored Italian culture while developing important values including truthfulness, kindness and bravery.
As part of their Italian studies, students embarked on a journey to Tuscany, the birthplace of Carlo Collodi’s famous wooden puppet. Through engaging language activities and discussions, they deepened their understanding of Italian culture while reflecting on the choices and experiences of one of Italy’s most enduring literary characters.
At the heart of the learning were three core values that resonate strongly within our school community: truthfulness, kindness and bravery.
Through Pinocchio’s famous growing nose, students explored the importance of truthfulness and how honesty helps build trust with family, teachers and friends. They reflected on how telling the truth not only helps us avoid mistakes and misunderstandings but also strengthens relationships and creates a sense of integrity within our community.
The story also provided meaningful opportunities to discuss kindness. Students considered how Pinocchio’s selfish actions affected those who cared about him, particularly the devoted Geppetto, and contrasted these moments with the compassion shown by the Blue Fairy. These conversations encouraged students to think about the small acts of kindness that make a difference every day, from including others in play to offering support to classmates.
Pinocchio’s dramatic rescue of Geppetto from the giant shark became a powerful example of bravery in action. Students discussed how courage is often demonstrated through selfless choices and doing what is right, even when faced with challenges or uncertainty.
By the end of the story, students recognised that Pinocchio becomes a real boy not because of magic alone, but because he learns to be honest, kind and brave. These timeless lessons sparked thoughtful conversations and inspired students to consider how they can demonstrate these values in their own lives.
Experiences such as these highlight the richness of Santa Sabina’s Languages program, where language learning is brought to life through culture, literature and meaningful real-world connections. By engaging with stories like Pinocchio, students develop not only their Italian language skills and cultural understanding but also the character, empathy and confidence that help them flourish both in and beyond the classroom.
