Eighteen Santa Sabina students have just returned from an unforgettable opportunity: the Fiji Sports Tour, combining high-level sporting competition with cultural immersion, community engagement and personal growth.
Throughout the eight-day tour during the term break, students competed in Touch Football and Netball against local schools and representative teams, culminating in outstanding performances at the Petero Foundation Tournament. Both teams progressed to their respective finals, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and adaptability against strong Fijian opposition.
Beyond the sporting arena, students embraced a rich cultural program that included a traditional village visit, Fijian dance workshops, a river safari along the Sigatoka River and creative art-making experiences with local artists. A visit to local primary schools also provided an opportunity to work alongside Petero Civoniceva in delivering sporting clinics for young students.
The tour highlighted the values of respect, sportsmanship and global citizenship, with Santa Sabina students earning praise from coaches and opponents alike for their positive attitude and commitment throughout the week.
Experiences such as the Fiji Sports Tour are a hallmark of a Santa Sabina education, providing students with opportunities to challenge themselves, build confidence and develop meaningful connections beyond the classroom.
According to Mr Luiz Ramalho, our Director of Sport and Co-curricular Activities, the way our students represented Santa Sabina College – with humility, kindness, compassion and respect – really stood out.
‘Their sportsmanship and willingness to connect with others reminded us that the true value of school sport lies not only in results, but in the character it helps build’, he said.
‘Experiences like this reinforce our belief that the Santa Sabina College Sport and Co-curricular portfolio plays a pivotal role in developing better human beings and future global citizens.’
