Year 8 students Emily and Lucy have achieved an outstanding result in the 2026 Australian Geography Competition, placing in the top 1% of Year 8 entrants across Australia.
The Australian Geography Competition is one of the nation’s leading academic competitions, attracting more than 47,000 secondary students from over 700 schools across Australia. Sponsored by the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales, Western Sydney University and the University of Western Australia, the competition challenges students to apply geographical knowledge and skills to real-world issues.
Participants are assessed across a broad range of topics, including physical and human geography, environmental management, sustainability, mapping and spatial thinking. Success in the competition requires students to analyse information, interpret data and think critically about the world around them.
Achieving a result in the top 1% nationally is a significant accomplishment and reflects Emily and Lucy’s exceptional understanding of geographical concepts and their ability to apply this knowledge in complex contexts.
