Congratulations to our ex-student Yvonne Strahovski on being nominated for an Emmy. Yvonne was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category and was the only Australian nominee in the 2018 Emmy Awards in the United States. The Emmys celebrate the best in television.

Yvonne’s demanding role as Serena Joy in the stunning television drama, The Handmaid’s Tale, has led to worldwide recognition and critical acclaim. A third season of the award-winning series will commence filming shortly.

SBS TV World News visited Santa Sabina this week to film background material for a news feature about the actress. Year 10 drama students Olivia Ayoub, Isobel Burkhard and Grace Campbell can be seen in the subsequent broadcast (clip above courtesy SBS TV World News).

Now based in Los Angeles, Yvonne attended Santa Sabina College from 1995 to 2000. She was an outstanding actress even then, appearing in school productions of Twelfth Night and Little Shop of Horrors, among others.

Yvonne is fondly remembered by many of her former teachers, including College Principal Dr Maree Herrett who was Head of English in the late 1990s.

Dr Herrett said that Yvonne was a great contributor to school life, not only as an actress but also as a passionate participant in Outdoor Education, an enthusiastic supporter of social justice causes and a much loved and entertaining friend to many of the students.

“Yvonne was fortunate to be nurtured by our Drama Department which was getting outstanding results under the leadership of the now retired Sarah Lovesy”, Dr Herrett said.

Ms Strahovski’s school friends described her as the greatest drama queen of the year in the 2000 Santa Sabina College yearbook. “Yvonne’s boisterous and cheeky nature ensures that excitement and craziness are always at hand when she is nearby. Her uncontrollable fits of laughter over ‘uniquely’ humorous matters only add to her dramatically eccentric character. Her often spontaneous urges for dancing and chocolate are just some of the few quirks that make Yvonne the lovable person she is”.

Yvonne’s own inspiring quote which she submitted as part of her Year 12 profile in her final yearbook was from another great Australian performer, Dame Nellie Melba: “I don’t care what you say for me or against me, but for heaven’s sake say something about me”.

We are very proud of Yvonne’s success as she inspires our current crop of students to follow their dreams, no matter how big.
