Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education

A sequential program of camps exists from Year 4 to Year 9. The Tallong Campus is utilised for the programs up to Year 8. The Year 9 program is run as a four-day expedition by an outside provider.

There is also a challenging set of optional adventure programs available to students on weekends and holidays.  These optional trips are available for those students who are seeking to push their boundaries in the outdoors and build upon the skills already learnt in the sequential Year group programs. The trips are available across the College. However due to the physical nature of some of them they are restricted to certain ages and skill level.  Optional trips include:

  • X-Country ski expeditions
  • Learn to Surf trips and safaris
  • Canyoning and Rockclimbing trips
  • Canoeing expeditions
  • Camel expeditions
  • Sea Kayaking
  • Caving adventures
  • Proposed interstate and overseas trips to Tasmania and New Zealand.

The sequential program is designed to be linked to curriculum outcomes and to challenge the students across four broad spheres of holistic educational development; physical, social, mental and spiritual. Strong emphasis is placed on community living, co-operative learning, goal setting and environmental stewardship.

As a complement to the sequential Outdoor Education Program at Santa Sabina College there is also the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. This program is entirely voluntary and each participant is free to choose their own program of activities and to progress according to personal needs, aptitude and availability of resources.

This Award scheme is an internationally known program that encourages a sense of initiative amongst its participants. It is broken up into four areas; Community Service, Physical Recreation, Skill Development and Expeditions.

  • Currently there are over 120 students enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, a significant number of whom are completing their Gold Award.  This is a significant achievement which takes place out of school hours.

This Award scheme may be undertaken from Year 9 onwards, with students working their way through the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. To fulfill all the requirements of the Gold Award is a significant achievement.
