Music

Santa Sabina College has a very active and vibrant Music Department, located in a beautiful historic building, Holyrood. The College provides twenty specialist teachers to develop the musical skills of students from years K to 12 and there is a busy schedule of rehearsals and performances throughout the year. The Music program is divided into three groups: Music (Curriculum), Music (Co-Curricular) and private instrument tuition.

  •  The Middle School Music programme includes Classic Hits, Instruments of the Orchestra, The Concepts of Music, The Musical, The Song and I Got Rhythm. Each unit masters different elements such as singing, composing and playing
  • The Year 8 Creative Arts rotates students through the year in Music, Visual Arts and Drama and incorporating Music for Radio, Film, Television and Multimedia..
  • Years 9 and 10 Elective Music develops the skills of all musicians including pianists, singers, percussionists and all other instrumentalists.  Students do not need to have studied an instrument prior to the Elective Music course, but private tuition is strongly recommended to assist in solo performance skills.
  • Years 9 and 10 Music Theatre is a vibrant, creative and expressive course that is run by the combined Santa Sabina Music and Drama Departments.  Students devise theatre, compose music, and combine these to create Music Theatre.
  • Music 1 caters for students with diverse musical backgrounds and interests.
  • Music 2 is for students with a formal background in the study of Music.
  • Festival of Music is an in-house eisteddfod held annually at the College.  The festival provides an opportunity for students to showcase their musical skills.  Students may enter as soloists or members of ensembles and heat winners are invited to perform at the Festival of Music Finalists’ Concert.
  • Music Camp.  Students involved in co-curricular ensembles travel to Tallong Campus and spend three days singing, playing instruments and rehearsing. The camp provides members of the College ensembles with an opportunity to develop and share their musical skills through extensive rehearsals.
  • Recitals.  All students who study an instrument at the College perform in at least one recital each semester.
  • Instrument Tuition. All students are encouraged to learn an instrument.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities to achieve their musical potential.

Music 1

Music 1 caters for students with diverse musical backgrounds and interests. It assumes no prior knowledge other than the study of Music in Middle School and Year 8, and allows opportunities to perform, compose and analyse music from a variety of styles. The course caters for the needs of each student, providing a choice of topics and specialised areas of study. The external HSC examination consists of:

  • One performance
  • One Musicology/Aural written paper
  • Three Electives (any combination of performance, musicology or composition)

Music 2

Music 2 and Music Extension is for students with a formal background in the study of Music. Students will study Western Art Music from 1600 to the present, and concentrate on music of the past 25 years (with an Australian focus). Students will develop musical knowledge and skills, and emerge with critical perception and musical sensitivity. Music Extension allows students with a highly sophisticated understanding of Music to specialise further in either performance, musicology or composition. Both courses are directed at students whose lives are significantly influenced by music.

Instrument Tuition

All students are encouraged to learn an instrument. The Santa Sabina instruments teachers are passionate in their belief that learning an instrument should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to explore their musical skill through learning an instrument of their choice, and experience the fun of playing in ensembles. Learning an instrument opens up many opportunities, such as performing in recitals, concerts, eisteddfods, and attending the annual Music Camp at Tallong Campus. To accommodate the needs of students, lessons are available for individual or group tuition and many instruments are also available for hire.
