Student Leadership

Leadership is one of the essential Dominican values which Santa Sabina College strives to uphold.  It is both a privilege and a responsibility.  Above all else, Leadership is service.  In accepting a Leadership position, a student is making a commitment to live the mission and values of the College in both their words and actions.

Student Leadership

The aim of Leadership is to be reflective, critical and visionary and shared within the community.

  • The focus of Student Leadership in the Primary school is participation.  Through their involvement the students learn responsibility and foundational skills for Leadership. SRC positions rotate every semester.
  • In the Middle School the students are elected by their peers for a range of representative Leadership positions.  Preparation for the election process involves students in reflection on the skills and qualities of a leader, including active listening, working collaboratively with others and the exercise of care and compassion.
  • In the Secondary School the Student Leadership system is made up of an interconnection of many teams, which in turn form links with the Pastoral and Co-curricular structures of the College.

Leadership Committees reflect the many aspects of co-curricular activity that are available to students and include Justice, Liturgy and Celebrations, Music, Drama, Sport and Recreation, Public Speaking and Debating.  The SRC operates in conjunction with the House system and Committees.

Our 2009 College Leader writes abour her Leadership experience

To me, Leadership is not defined by one’s badge or a title; it represents a decision to serve others, be a positive role model and enthusiastically engage in all aspects of College life.

A successful leader is able to provoke positive change on an individual and community scale through their interaction with others. Connecting on a personal level is a vital step in inspiring enthusiasm, motivation and passion in individuals to achieve a common purpose. An effective leader will strive to bring out leadership qualities in others, enabling them to realise their true potential.

Throughout my time at Santa Sabina I have been fortunate to be exposed to a host of opportunities including School Leadership Camp, Debating, Japanese Exchange, College Drama Productions and sport. These endeavours enriched my experience as a leader through my development of teamwork, public speaking skills, confidence and communication.

Santa Sabina’s Dominican values, including truth, justice, and individuality, have been instrumental in shaping my approach to leadership. I try to bring enthusiasm, creativity and determination to every task, to cultivate school spirit and a sense of community. Finally, in the interest of engaging in constant learning and development, I gratefully accept support and guidance from teachers and peers, and actively listen to other’s unique ideas and input.
