Social Justice

Social Justice

The College Mission Statement includes the following words:

"The school has a particular commitment to the promotion of, and education for justice … this commitment is reflected in all aspects of the life of the College. "

Education for Justice is integrated into College life in two main areas - education and outreach.

The key elements of the College’s Education for Justice Plan include:

  • Outreach activities take place at an individual, group, house, year or campus level.  They include such activities as Night Patrol, Women’s Refuge support, Homework Help for Sudanese refugees and making Christmas hampers for disadvantaged groups and individuals.
  • Issues of injustice are explored within the context of relevant Key Learning Areas and are developmentally spiralled across K-12.
  • Immersion programs. Senior students can choose to see the world from another perspective by taking part in an immersion experience.  Recent programs have taken students from Years 9-11 to Central Australia, South Africa and East Timor, and allowed them to work in Sydney and at Tallong Campus with children who have physical and mental disabilities.
  • See- reflect –act framework. Working towards a just society requires teachers and students to critique and analyse injustices (Why is it so?), to reflect on their impact on people and then to respond in an appropriate way.
  • Opportunities for Parents. Parents can become involved by supporting their child’s personal or house activities, by attending adult education opportunities, or by joining a roster for an activity like Night Patrol alongside their child.

Whatever you do to these, the least of my brothers and sisters, you do to me.
