Dominican Family
Santa Sabina College is a ministry of the Dominican sisters who are part of the world-wide Dominican
Order of men and women, founded by St Dominic in Europe in the thirteenth century. The Congregation is
linked with the international Dominican Family through networks such as the Dominican Sisters
International and Dominican Volunteers International.
- The property at Strathfield is the Congregational headquarters for the Dominican Sisters of
Eastern Australia and the Solomon Islands. From here the Leadership Team administers the works of the
sisters located throughout the eastern states and the Solomons.
- Known as the Order of Preachers, the Congregation is committed to the motto of Truth.
Dominicans teach and minister in universities, schools and parishes throughout Australia as well as
supporting through their presence many initiatives for the poor and marginalised in our society.
- Communities supported by the College include: The Dominican Sisters in the Solomons and East Timor,
the Dominican Sisters of Montebello, Natal, South Africa and the Kopanang Project, an initiative of the
Dominicans near Johannesburg, South Africa, which is devoted to providing for women whose families have
been impacted upon by the AIDS pandemic.
Over a number of years the College has established contacts with Dominican communities beyond Australia
which we support by personal contact and fund raising. Education about these communities is an important
part of our social justice education program for students, staff and parents.
