Actions speak louder than words

A young Year 2 student came to me this week with a small bag of coins and some five and 10 dollar notes. Very quietly, he asked me to send his money to the Sisters in the Solomon Islands. When I asked him about the money, he told me that he had earned it by making lemonade and, with his parents by his side, sold the glasses of lemonade to people in his neighbourhood as they passed by.

I thanked him and said that there seemed to be a lot of money in that plastic bag. He replied that he had worked hard over the weekend and wanted the money to be given to help the children at school in the Solomon Islands.

As I walked away I knew that something very special had just happened.

I was reminded of Margaret Mead’s quote “Never doubt that a group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”

I had just met one of those people.
